Chapter 24: Falcondrake

Solvai

Solvai led what was left of Squad Reckless through the narrow slot canyon. They naturally fell behind the other survivors, and before long, they couldn’t even see the rest of the group. It was almost as if Solvai and the rest of her squad were going slow in hopes that their banished squadmates would emerge from the Dragon Mists and catch up.

Of course, that wasn’t going to happen. Solvai knew the Mists were wild and unpredictable. One step in and you may never find your way out again.

But Meleya was smart, and both she and Jax were powerful magi. Maybe there was a chance they’d survive the Dragon Mists long enough to escape. Solvai ignored the fact that both Meleya and Jax had already expended almost all of their ether during the battle. She clung to that shred of optimism like it was a lifeline.

The Narrows were exactly that. Compressed redrock canyons so tight Solvai felt almost like she couldn’t breathe as they hiked through them in single file. They’d had to send their squad’s dragons, Bolt, Chonk, and Eris climbing the walls up to the top of the ravine. They’d reconvene with their riders where the slot canyon let out into the main one at the North Tower. Eris struggled to climb the cliff face since one of her wings had been badly scratched during the battle, but with Erik’s encouragement and a little push from Bolt, she made it to the top where she could walk safely.

Solvai hoped the lieutenants were being good to Meleya and Jax’s dragons, Sniff and Jade. Commander Hildred had ordered her lackeys to make sure the two evren didn’t follow their old riders. Since the lieutenants possessed their heartscales, the dragons had no choice but to obey.

Solvai ducked and climbed around the smooth slot canyon formations. Each footstep echoed a little, and the flowing, horizontal patterns along the rock reminded Solvai of wood grain. Everything smelled damp, as if this place often filled with water then drained again.

They reached the North Tower, then pressed on carefully up the main canyon toward the Rise. They moved quietly, not wanting to give the Coven of the Gray Ones any reason to pursue in case they had sentries on watch nearby.

Squad Reckless followed the river north until sundown when they made camp near the base of the canyon wall. Commander Hildred and the other survivors were still nowhere in sight, most likely settling down for the night somewhere further up the canyon. Even without Meleya and Jax to spark the commander’s ire, Solvai felt it best that their entire squad give her a little distance. They’d meet up with the others back at the Rise.

Besides, as they journeyed north through the canyon, they continued to see small groups of Outcast Outpost refugees making their way to Keep Rengard proper. Solvai figured it was best if they acted as a rearguard, in case any of the refugees needed help.

Nobody had said a word since they’d started their hike up the Narrows, a silence that held as the squad settled in for the night.
